Genre tags are useful, but they are not enough for performance. In a live set, the question is rarely only “What genre is this?” More often, the question is “What can this track do right now?”
A good DJ library helps you make decisions under pressure. That means tagging tracks by function, energy, and mood.
Functional tags describe how a track can be used:
- opener
- warm-up
- bridge
- peak
- reset
- closer
- vocal tool
- percussion tool
- emergency track
Energy tags describe intensity:
- low pressure
- rolling
- driving
- peak-time
- hands-up
- afterhours
Mood tags describe emotional color:
- dark
- bright
- hypnotic
- soulful
- aggressive
- playful
- nostalgic
- euphoric
The point is not to create a complicated tagging system. The point is to add the information you actually need while playing. If a tag does not help you make a faster or better decision, you probably do not need it.
Start small. Add three useful tags to 50 tracks. Then record a mix using those tags. You will quickly learn which labels help and which labels create noise.
A strong library does not just tell you what a track is. It tells you what a track can do.
